It's been two weeks and two days since Chris Brown signed a two-year deal with the Houston Texans worth a reported $3.6 million. The Heat Index took a look at how the blogosphere responded to the news of the former All-American at Naperville North signing his free agent deal.
Pro Football talk was bare bones, but did offer a bit of analysis by mentioning Brown would have to compete with Ahman Green for carries.
The AOL Fanhouse said Houston's zone blocking scheme is good for Brown, this changes things for Ron Dayne and that Brown was probably better than LenDale White last year for the Titans. The post also mentions that the Bears were interested in Brown, as the Chicago Tribune reported on March 12.
Musiccitymiracles.com was surprised that Brown found another team so fast.
Texansgab.com said Brown is a good fit, if he stays healthy.
Battleredblog.com said it is more likely that Brown will "crash and burn" in training camp than it is for Brown to rush for 1,000 yards this season.
Foxsports.com said Brown's fantasy football value will be determined in his competition with Green for playing time and that this spells doom for Dayne.
This guy said Brown's upside and his history as a 1,000-yard back do not make up for Brown's history as a back that "kept getting injured and couldn't hold on to the ball."
"When his fumbles inevitably occurred, I couldn't help but think the Titans would have been better off if he had been sidelined with another of his nagging injuries."
The real heat was on the message board of the Houston Texas team website, where a 22-page thread about the Brown signing can be found. It starts with discussion of whether the team should go after Brown and ends with various opinions about the move.
Thumbs Up
"I don't claim to be a football guru, but anyone can look at our 07 season and see we needed the help, and CB is the perfect fit."
...
"I think what they saw in free agency was the ability to bring in a home run threat in Brown."
...
"I've always liked Brown, he reminds me of an up-2-date Eric Dickerson. The way he runs straight up..."
Thumbs Down
"What a WASTE!! This is really the first Bad decision I see the Front Office making. They will regret the Day they sign this BUM!!"
...
"The main knock on Brown is he will not play in pain. ... It's like he looks for reasons not to play and just wants the paycheck."
...
"Point I'm trying to make... Brown probably will get injured while walking to his car after practice one day and be out for a good portion of the season."
From Titans Fan
"I didn't want to see him leave Titans, but at the same time, Brown needs a change of scenery as well as its time for Titans to part ways. I thought he'd sign with Bears since he's from Naperville. Hope he works for you guys..."
