Neuqua Valley has the chance to break a rare and long drought in Naperville high school athletics on Tuesday night when it takes on Richards in the Chicago State University Super-Sectional.
Benet Academy in Lisle is a school in The Naperville Sun's coverage area and placed third in Class AA in 1979 and lost in the state quarterfinals in 1982 and 1983.
But no Naperville public high school has reached the state finals in boys basketball since 1915. Then Naperville HIgh School lost to Shelbyville 30-20 in the quarterfinals held at Millikin Gym in Decatur.
The layup hadn't been invented yet and players only took half-court shots. I'm kidding.
But how long ago was it?
Woodrow Wilson, the 28th President, was in his first term.
World War I was in its second year.
The luster was still on the Cubs' World Series championship trophy won just seven years before.
Arizona and New Mexico were in just their third year of statehood. Alaska and Hawaii still had to wait 44 more years for their chances.
The White Sox were still two years away from winning their first World Series.
