New Neuqua principal says "Go Rams"

Earlier The Heat Index wondered if incoming Neuqua Valley principal Robert McBride, who happens to be the current principal at Glenbard East, would have a hard time picking sides when the two teams meet on Friday at the boys volleyball state quarterfinals.

McBride responded to our e-mail queries along those lines late on Wednesday night. Glenbard East has its graduation at 7 p.m. on Friday, so McBride won't be in attendance at the state finals.

He will be hoping for a Glenbard East victory.

McBride's first day as Neuqua principal will be on July 1. The Heat Index guessed that he would be a Glenbard East supporter until that day.

"You are entirely accurate in terms of the above statement," he wrote. "I will be "true to my school" until June 30 and after July 1. Go Rams and Go Big Red."

He went on to explain his thoughts on this confluence of events: his hiring at Neuqua and the two teams facing each other in his final month at Glenbard East.

"In general, my thoughts about Glenbard East versus Neuqua on Friday night have an obvious, personal sense of irony," McBride wrote. "As a principal, however, it just highlights to me the excitement, intensity, and exhilaration that goes along with high school sports, especially at the state series level. That excitement and competition is the very reason why I enjoy the role of the principalship so much. Athletics is a classroom in itself, and its drama unites communities, players, and students. In cheering for our teams, we all have hope-- and just like the players, our hope is to reach for excellence, for the best. We all stretch, not just the players. That is, entirely, the point of schooling-- to stretch. So I am looking forward to the thrill and tension of competition this weekend."

Seems like a leader to me.
