State prelims: Pinnick knows hurdles

Waubonsie Valley junior Shakeia Pinnick ran the fastest times in both the 100-meter high hurdles and the 300 low hurdles on Friday in the prelims of the IHSA Class AA girls track and field state championships at EIU's O'Brien Stadium in Charleston.

Pinnick's time in the 300 hurdles -- 42.77 seconds -- has her way out in front of the pack. Morgan Monroe of Lane Tech was the second fastest at 43.05.

In the 100 hurdles, Pinnick has some tough company with her 14.35. East St. Louis Senior High's Ronecia East, as in 2007 100-meter dash state champion Ronecia East, qualified at 14.39. East also ran the fastest time in the 200 and qualified for the 100 finals, too, so she's pretty slow.

Pinnick, who didn't run the 800, came up short in the 200, finishing third in her heat at 25.49. Benet senior Kelsey Ontko did make the 200 final with her 25.39.

From the Sun-Times.

Pinnick decided to scratch from the 800 so she could save her energy for the 300 low hurdles, which seemed to work out well since she ran the fastest preliminary time of 42.77 and won her heat. But Pinnick was not pleased.

"That was a horrible race," Pinnick said. "I wanted to go into this fresh. I was stuttering [the steps] and it was upsetting. I know I can improve a lot. I was trying to go for the record."

Pinnick also qualified in the 100 high hurdles with a 14.35.

"I was really focused [in the 100] and I hit the second hurdle hard and I fell behind," Pinnick said.

The other double-qualifier for the Naperville area was Benet sophomore McKinzie Schulz, who advanced in both the 800 (2:14.19) and the 1,600 (5:03.03). Waubonsie's Toni Ogundare also made in to Saturday in the 800.

Neuqua senior Monika Jakutyte and Neuqua junior Aura Jakutyte both made the finals in the high jump along with 15 others at 5-feet, 3-inches.

The Wildcats also got two through in the triple jump with junior Kristen Mortensen going 36-11 and senior Krista Stillson popping for 37-2 1/2.

Benet's Maria Scheet was one of 12 pole vaulters to clear 10-9.

On a day when Bailey Wagner of Grant set a state record in the discus with 157-8, Naperville Central's Jessica Carter made the finals with a 132-2.
