DETROIT -- While going to a Tigers game in June has its own set of benefits, Saturday's home game in Detroit went above and beyond mainly because of the establishment former Blackhawks defender Chris Chelios owns.
Cheli's Chili Bar sits beside Comerica Park, and on Saturday it was host to the Stanley Cup. Chelios, Nicklas Lindstrom, Kris Draper and company did there best to give the good people of Detroit a chance to embrace the most unique trophy in all of sports over and over again inside and outside Cheli's.
This reporter took advantage.
I'm not a Red Wings fan. I'm not a huge hockey fan. But The Heat Index will bow down when royalty is in view.
I fought to get an audience with Lord Stanley's Cup. The first time I touched it, I was in awe. The second time I touched it, I was still blown away, but OK with it because I had drank from the Cup thanks to Lindstrom et al. That was so amazing.
Seriously. I'm as jaded as most sports journalists, but when you actually fight to get a drink from the fountain of sports immortality, you can't help but recognize how good it tastes.
