Wiggan, Winek to run at Distance Gala

Waubonsie Valley senior Sean Wiggan and Neuqua Valley junior Bryan Winek are scheduled to run tonight in the Midwest Distance Gala at Benedictine University.

Wiggan placed fourth at the All-Star Spotlight Meet last weekend and was fourth at the IHSA Class AA state championships in the 800-meter run. Despite that, Wiggan is not considered a challenger in the event, according to this preview.

As this preview explains, that's because the 800 field is stacked. In addition to two-time Illinois state champion Mat Smoody of Palatine state runner-up Jeff Stapleton of Willowbrook and third-place finisher Graham Farnsworth from Wheaton North, there is also Michigan Division II state champion Tommy Brinn.

Wattertown, Wisc., product Andrew Perkins is also in the field. His 1:49.46 is currently the fourth-fastest time in the nation. Smoody has the eighth best time in the country.

Winek, who was part of Neuqua's cross country state championship team last fall, will run in the 3,200.

The field includes heavy-favorite Bobby Aprill, who won both the 1,600 and the 3,200 at Michigan's Division II state championships this year. He also won the cross country state title as a junior and was runner-up this season.
