Naperville has really bad gas ... prices

Naperville is home to the highest gas prices in the state, according to the Web site illinoisgasprices.com. We're paying 80 cents more per gallon here than they're paying in Peoria, 150 miles away.

At least that's what the site indicated on Wednesday. A few disclaimers: Naperville was tied with several other communities where gas also was selling for $3.59 a gallon. The Web site is an online community that relies on information submitted by participants, though there's no reason to believe the prices are anything but accurate. A check of the Naperville station's prices Wednesday confirmed the outrageous price-per-gallon.

A few thoughts: Naperville is part of the Chicago metro area where stations have to sell a cleaner-burning fuel, so that's one reason gas costs more here. And local taxes tack on a few cents per gallon that downstaters don't pay. But what I don't understand is, how could gas possibly cost more in Naperville than in Chicago? Remember the old days, when gas used to cost a ridiculous 60 cents a gallon more in the city? Now it seems like it's the same everywhere you go in the city and suburbs. What's going on here?
