On Tuesday Naperville breaks ground on a $25 million, 200,000-square-foot Multi-Purpose Public Works Service Center at the northeast corner of Fort Hill Drive and Jefferson Avenue. The best part about it? It's going to be green.

Not the color, literally, but green, as in environmentally friendly. That means the heating, cooling and water systems will be certified energy efficient. Building materials will be chosen with Mother Earth in mind.

As far as public works facilties goes, this one ought to be a gem by the time it opens in late 2008, Besides housing Naperville's fleet services and operations, welding, paint and sign shops, the facility will feature community meeting rooms, administrative and office areas, and heated and unheated storage areas.

It also will house archival storage for Naper Settlement.
