Is there such a thing as a free ride?

For nearly two weeks Kate and I have been asking Naperville Sun readers to participate in our 5k training, and fundraising if they feel so inclined.

But no one has.

Maybe you don’t want to be committed to something, or you don’t want your name out there (you can donate anonymously online), or maybe you just don’t want to make the tax deducible contribution.

Thats okay, too – but then do something that doesn’t cost any money.

Friday, Kate and I participated in the Ultimate Drive at Bill Jacobs BMW in Naperville.

drive

We drove a sleek silver convertible around Naperville, racking up eight miles on the brand new 328i. That’s $8 donated the Susan G. Komen Foundation and it cost us nothing other than a few more tangles in our windblown hair!

For every mile driven in the 23 vehicles available for during the Ultimate Drive event, $1 was donated by BMW to the Komen Foundation.

I guess there really is such a thing as a free ride.

Visit Kate and Jennifer's online fundraising Web site and help find a Cure.

Don't get discouraged, I think people are choosing to donate to people they know personally like friends and coworkers. I don't even think I could accurately list everyone I know who is participating in some level in the Race For The Cure event without sitting down with a piece of paper and thinking about it for a while. A lot of those people either myself or my company have already pledged donations to. As I've told friends who are running, "I've already donated a ton, it all goes to the same place."

As far as why people aren't getting involved in helping you train, it's hard to contribute after the eye-roll inducing "Wanted: motivation" post from earlier in the month. Raising money for cancer research should be motivation enough without needing to make deals with yourself, buy iPods, or reward yourself with other "treats".

Just my two cents.
