A federal lawsuit filed Wednesday claims that "in January of 2006, the Naperville police orchestrated the false arrest of their No. 1 political enemy, Naperville City Councilman Richard R. Furstenau." Do you think that's true?
It's great drama that an elected official who preaches fiscal restraint is attempting to extract financial damages from the public he serves. Boy, if he thinks the police didn't like him before, what effect does he think his lawsuit is going to have?
This would be even bigger news if Dick hadn't the misfortune of announcing his suit on a day when the DuPage bomb squad had to halt train traffic, put schools on lockdown and evacuate several businesses in order to secure a homeless guy's belongings.
It shows what lengths a person will go to to protect his name, his reputation, his integrity. Furstenau claims his arrest and the ensuing publicity cost him a state Senate seat. Do you believe him? Do you think he should be suing the city? Or is this more like a case of a hothead doing whatever it takes to make a point?

It's VERY possible that Furstenau was made a target - I mean get serious about those allegations that he "made contact" (by slapping with the back of his hand some guy's shoulder )
so hard that some one standing 60 feet away on a busy downtown street with cars going in each direction and heard the alleged slapping sound ?
But then the officer waits almost TWO WEEKS to file a Charge - and it takes almost two years to bring the case to trial ?!! Thats just bogus and not reality the charges and the time it took to go trial.
I think Dick needs to learn to just let things go. He lost the election. Crying about it isn't going to change the result.
If his intentions are to be gone from public life then I have to offer a tip of the hat to the man. This is definitely one way to be all but guaranteed of not being elected to anything ever again.
If that's the case, I think it's quite clever because one can 'play victim' the entire time too.
"I won't stop until this comes to a conclusion"
Free Advice time, Mr. F.
Guess what, it stops when you want it to stop and not a minute sooner and it will go on not a minute longer.
yes. Unfortunately, most police officers (in fact most people) put their own self interests before honesty and integrity. And many police officers consider themselves above the law. It's bad for the good police officers which I believe are a minority.
There's no doubt in my mind the city did this on purpose. Having been a long time follower of the City Council meetings, it's fairly obvious that the other members of government don't get along too well with Furstenau. He talks a little too straight for them and has been a stick in the mud for a lot of issues especially in regards to the budgets of Naperville's police and fire departments.
If the charges were legit, the case would have been handled swiftly and professionally. Two weeks to file charges and two years to go to court? The whole thing screams of a set up. Conspiracy theory or not, it's not hard for me to believe that it was suggested that someone finds a reason to arrest Furstenau and then somehow his case magically kept getting shuffled to the bottom of the pile to drag it out as long as possible.
I'm not sure if the arrest is responsible for him losing the election, but it certainly didn't help. I hope he sues the pants off the city and wins. If nothing else it will serve as a lesson to them to not drag their feet on legal proceedings.
How can Furstenau still participate on decisions of the City Council while he is seeking legal action against the City. Mr. Furstenau please step down from your City Council position while this situation is on going.
Stick it to the man! Richard. I hope you win. I'd vote for you for mayor!
I've known Dick personally for many years, and have followed his work as city councilman during successive terms. Although not always in agreement with certain of his positions, there's never been any doubt in my mind as to his intentions/integrity.
He's no liar. He's a very intense guy, but not a brawler. Most importantly, he's a law abiding citizen who has devoted countless hours to what he perceives as being in the best interests of Naperville.
From what I've read relative to his lawsuit, I don't believe he seeks montary compensation, but, recognition on the part of the city that he's been wronged and deserves better treatment than has previously been afforded.
Mr. F is not hurting anyone except the Citizens of Naperville, the tax payers. The funds used to pay the salaries for the City Legal Staff and the Police Officers that will have to go to court comes from the city taxes that the citizens pay.
Mr. F would have lost that race regardless of what happened with the police. The Sun Times *endorsed* his opponent:
"48th: Rep. Randall "Randy" Hultgren is vying with lawyer Richard "Dick" Furstenau for the seat formerly held by Sen. Pete Roskam, who is hoping to head to Congress. These two Republicans are strong candidates. Furstenau has had experience as a Naperville city councilman, but Hultgren, who has been a state representative since 1999 and has some wise ideas about state pension reform, is our choice."
At the Primary, Hultgren had 14,867 votes and Furstenau 9,823. At the General Election Hultgren won with 48,228 votes!
Furstenau's base of voters at the April 17, 2007 Consolidated Election for the City of Naperville was 8,495. How many more people did he expect to vote for him and did they really change their minds based on this incident with the police? Probably not. We have such low voter turn out in the U.S. and this being a state race with more focus on the governor's position, Furstenau's chances were slim to begin with.
Here's a quote from Mr. F's own website: "I am very frugal when it comes to the tax dollar," he said. "I treat it like it's my own. And I think the state needs to get a taste of that, too."
Well, thank goodness the state didn't get a taste of what the City of Naperville will be tasting; Bitter revenge.
Before the SUN asks the question, "Do you think Mr. Furstenau has the right to sue?", I think it should first do a much better job at reporting the facts of the case as filed in the suit. I have been very disappointed in the media coverage this case has received by the omitting of many of the key facts.
I have stayed in touch with this story, becasue I know Mr. Furstenau. He coached my Pop Warner football team. Before people make this decision people should know key things:
1) The officer said he was hit so hard that it stunned him and he didn't know what to do. Then it took over two weeks to arrest him. Get serious! I challenge anyone to go hit and officer so hard that it stuns him, and see what happens right on the spot.
2) There was no radio call of this incident on dispatch tapes at the time it allegedly took place. Then the officer said that he called it in on his cell phone to save the councilman any embarrassment. Please. Then, they subpoena phone records that show that no such call was ever placed. After that, the officer refused to testify under oath.
3) The original filling of charges was for felony assault which would have landed him in PRISON for at least 1 year. Yet he still wasn't arrested for 2 weeks. The judge said a felony charge was ridiculous, so they changed it to a misdemeanor. That should tell you just how bad they wanted to railroad him to begin with.
4) In the original report Officer Hull filed (and documented on 3 different occasions by the way) he said that the incident took place at a certain time when Mr. Furstenau wasn't even in the downtown area. When that was discovered, Officer Hull was ordered by his superiors to change his report and alter the time.
5) The police and city maintain to this day, that their case failed because they couldn't provide an eye witness backing their story. Amazing, when the incident took place on the middle of the day in down town Naperville right before the start of a parade.
6) There were several witnesses who came forward and said they saw the entire incident and Mr. Furstenau never touched the officer. The city only interviewed one of them and ignored the rest. And when they did interview the one, they only asked if they felt, "Mr. Furstenau was capable of hitting an officer." They never asked what he actually saw.
7) Did it cost him the election. Consider the several ads his opponent ran of his councilman Furstenau’s "run in" with the law. Then the city postponed the trial date on several occasions, pushing it back over a year until after the election was to take place. It certainly hurt to some degree. Consider the fairly close vote and you decide. What about the Constitutional right to a speedy trial?
This is only a small sample of the many facts that were filed with the suit and disclosed at the news conference yesterday. Yet the sun hasn't reported one of them.
If all this happened to you, and your name was dragged through the mud in the papers for over an 18 month period, what would you do? Remember that this incident was voted by SUN readers as the #1 news story of the year. The SUN should give Mr. Furstenau’s claim, and the facts of the case, as much coverage as they gave the police department’s charges.
Considering that all these are facts are not disputed by the city, I hope he wins and wins big! God help us if any of us find ourselves in a similar situation.
This isn't about losing the election, financial gain, or an elected official suing the city. Get off that part of the story. It is about officers, who have been entrusted with power and have sworn an oath to serve and protect, targeting and falsely accusing a man to protect their pension double-dipping and overtime pay.
If they truly did this, they should all go to jail for abusing that power. Further more, it wouldn't be the first corrupt discovery in the Naperville Police Department.
As a resident of Naperville I am deeply saddened by Mr. Furstenau's lawsuit. However, I am even more frightened of a police force that wrongly arrests our citizens and wastes our hard-earned tax dollars on a bogus trial. If the NPD has the unmitigated gall to do this against a well-known, current member of city council, God help the rest of us.
We hear so much about false arrests these days and have seen DNA tests clear people after they have spent years or decades rotting in prison or sitting on death row. An arrest of this nature is truly alarming. It makes me wonder what length the NPD would go to prosecute me or smear my reputation. We'll never know whether these obviously bogus charges (just my humble opinion) cost Mr. Furstenau the election or not, but they definitely didn't help his standing with the public. I can see his need to want to clear his name and receive some form of restitution. I know that's what I would want to do if it were me, and I sure hope I could scrape together the money to hire a good attorney and defend myself. I wish him well.
Absolutely no doubt in my mind that this was set up by the NPD. I’m not sure who milks the city more, the District 203 teachers union or the police / fire department.
I find it interesting that the City's Attorney has suggested that the Naperville Police Department's internal investigation was completed with their "untarnished integrity." It took the Police 2 weeks to figure out their story before arresting Dick. What the public doesn't know is that after the Police spent weeks figuring out the timeframe in which Dick allegedly battered a police officer, Dick wasn't even in downtown Naperville at that time. After learning this, the Cops then went back to the drawing board and had Officer Hull change his story and figured a new timeline to be sure they could place Dick downtown Naperville at the alleged time of the "battery." It was obvious within days after the arrest that this was bogus.
It's with the same "untarnished integrity" that the Naperville Police Department investigated their own officer for DUI. Five Cops testified that the Officer in question had not been drinking; therefore, the arresting officer, not the officer arrested for DUI, was discipline by Cheif Dial. What the public doesn't know is that the officer who was arrested for DUI, then subsequently cleared, had a Blood Alcohol level of more than twice the legal limit as messured hours after the arrest at Edwards Hospital as required by all City employees who are suspected of drinking on the job.
Councilman Furstenau wanted to become a city councilman because he was tired of watching developers and lawyers push around previous coucilmembers and turning the city into a much different place than it had been in the past. He had a wealth of business knowledge that would serve the city well. Most importantly he has never been affraid to stand up to anyone in a position of power if he felt someone was being taken advantage of; this was a trait that was greatly needed by the City at that time. He was never in this for himself, but to be the voice of the residents that were never heard.
The arrogance of Furstenau is unbelievable. He is certainly living up to his first name. I have been involved several times with the police department in various matters and they are the essence of professionalism, compassion and caring for the residents. Maybe it's Dick's attitude that needs adjusting. I think Dickie boy jumped the shark on this one. He is for the taxpayers. What is this little fiasco going to cost us?
I'm behind Furstenau all the way
I hope he continues to put the heat on the Naperville Police
this town has become a police state, and the naperville cops have been abusing their power more and more and getting away with it.
The way they prey on our teenagers, it boarders on predatory tactics., and they completely trample there rights and the parents rights also.
We need more people like Furstenau, to start blowing the whistle on there tactics and corruption
This "fiasco" may end up costing the tax payers, but the Naperville Police Department will the ones to blame for conducting a bogus and false investigation. Not Mr. Furstenau.
Holding the Police Department and City accountable for making up charges and falsely accusing an individual is the right thing to do. Blame the NPD.
Further more, people keep commenting on the NPD's "integrity" and "professionalism". How ironic. If they city ends up paying for this incident, it won't be the first time the City and its taxpayers have had to financially pay for the "integrity and professionalism" of the NPD. The previously mentioned, Officer DUI and double-the-legal-limit blood test that was covered up and lied about in court, is only one of many examples of the NPD's so called integrity.
If Dick wants to do the right thing for Naperville, he should stop this nonsense right now. Either step down from the council, or be the man you say you are, and think about the citizens first.
These are tuff times for everybody, so suck it up.
Well, if you're not Alderman Richard Furstenau, it doesn't take two weeks to get arrested. It takes two minutes and you spend the night in jail. The police took their time, looking for a way not to arrest Furstenau. His arrogance caught up with him. I'm sure if he wins, he's out of here. Furstenau should consider himself lucky that voter turnout is miniscule in Naperville, and he can get enough of his friends to the polls to vote him in.
Stop making such a big deal over the fact it took two weeks to arrest this guy. Maybe it was because the cops knew the firestorm it would cause. Who knows? All that matters is he had his day in court and was vindicated. Right or wrong, he is now an innocent man. However, I don't think it was done maliciously and I don't think it cost him the election. His free-spending ways while proclaiming to protect the taxpayers (see his Carillon vote) cost him votes. He's just trying to soak it to us now and stay in the spotlight as the "victim" for some free press. Fight the suit and NEVER vote for this bum again.
Before people start maligning the city and the police department, maybe someone should check into WHO wanted the trial continued time and time again. While you're at it, check into the dirty little deal made to get a stipulated bench trial. All of you who are complaining that the officer didn't even testify, guess what ... at a stipulated bench trial NO ONE testifies. Also, if the police department really hated this guy so much WHY would it do something that "cost him the election." I personally voted for Dick to get him out of town. Not once has he represented me. Dick, you are an egomaniac and you really need get over yourself. You are an embarassment yourself and your family. You are a small little man and when you are gone you will only be remembered as a joke.
Named U Right, you should look up the facts of the case before you imply things contrary to them. In fact, I would ask everyone review the facts filed in the claim before they pass judgment. They are public and available for anyone to read.
Of the 5 or so times the trial was delayed, the city was resposible for all but one of them. The city was also the side who requested a stipulated bench trial. They did so because they had no witnesses who would testify in a jury trial; including officer Hull who filed the incident report and was later caught in a lie. They requested a bench trial after the county prosecutor suggested they drop the charges all-together because their case was a joke. And, the only reason why a side requests a bench trial is because they know their case has no merit. The request for a bench trial itself was a concession of sort by the city. The reason Dick and his attorney agreed on the bench trial was because it would get everything over in a day instead of days or weeks, and the evidence was overwhelmingly in their favor.
The reason why many of the facts in the claim are indisputable is because they were among the stipulations agreed on by both sides for the bench trial. I simply ask anyone to review those facts before they pass a judgment.
I am appalled that this man (and his enormous ego) still believes that he can represent my best interests as a taxpayer, all the while he is suing me and my neighbors. And how come no one here has pointed out that even after he lost the state senatorial race, he was, none the less re-elected to the City Council?!!!! If his reputation was that damaged, how did he win that election? File the suit, but you need to resign from City Government Dick!
If Furstenau was really for "fiscal responsibility" he wouldn't be costing the taxpayers all of this money. Furstenau is for only one thing - himself. All of the people standing up for him (and knocking firefighters and teachers unions?) really have to have their integrity and sanity questioned. Furstenau is a well-known bully and the worst kept secret is that his first name is no accident. He should not be allowed to participate in city council until he gives up his ridiculous suit.
Honestly, what fool demands money for a wrong doing they clearly committed? Does Furstenau have any idea what an imbecile this makes him out to be?
Perhaps he should be granted anger management counseling.
Mr. Furstenau did not give up his civil rights when he was elected to Council. He has the same right to sue as any other citizen. Whether or not it is a "right" action is strictly a judgment call.
Speaking of Naperville Police cover - ups what about the Muslim man whom the police raided in his home at 1AM...while he was asleep in his bed they came into his home saying his front door was open. Then when he got upset about the Naperville Police allegedly illegally entering his home after Midnight they arrested him.
The Police & the City might be settling out of Court for LOTS More than Furstenau has requested or perhaps they already have done so ?
Is his position and stance that he never made any contact whatsoever for any reason w/ a police officer regarding the incident?
Todd, post a link to the case's documents please.
NPD has no integrity. This thread sucks because of the person that keeps bashing Furstenau using diferent user names. The other people posting gave informative reponses. Bottom line: the world is a sad place even if you live in Naperville. And living here can be depressing because of the horrific traffic gridlock --Naperville is supposedly one of the best places to live -- yeah, right.
First of all; Dicky is in charge of where and how money is spent. Who gave him the right to put into question day-to-day operations? This whole thing started because Dicky questioned why cars were being towed, what concern is it of his? When did he become the City Manager? If someone was towing cars along the parade route, it was because they were told to do so. Officer Hull should not have even been consulted; if Dicky had a question about it he should have picked up a phone called the City Manager, Mr. Peter Burchard and asked if this was something that should be happening. It’s called chain of command! That would have been the correct thing to do, there would have been no “incident”, no trial, no law suit and no tax payers’ money would be wasted on this man who has no respect for anyone but himself.
Second; I believe that the police department and Officer Hull showed great restraint in this situation and Officer Hull should be commended for showing restraint and consulting his superiors before any action was taken. I personally wish that he would have used on him the very item that Dicky was against buying; the tasers.
4) I have been told this is not the first time Dick has had a negative interaction with city employees. There have been several other documented incidents over the last three years. All of them have involved Dick’s uncontrollable power of authority.
5) The case was decided by a stipulation to the judge. Based on what I read, this almost never occurs in criminal trial. This decision was decided by the DuPage County State’s Attorneys office, which is run by the republican Joe Birkett. Dick is also a republican, based on his failed attempt to be an elected to state senate. Is it possible that the State’s Attorney threw the case, with Dick’s political interest in mind?
6) Based on what I read, you only need probable cause to make an arrest. Once again, if you review the court transcripts you will see that the judge acknowledged Dick made contact with Officer Hull.
It’s a shame everyone must make their decision on the media’s facts, rather than what truly occurred. The following is a list of facts that have failed to surface during Dick’s obvious need for attention:
1) The DuPage County Judge (Carey Pierce) clearly states is his ruling (the following were taken from the court transcripts) “It’s obvious this incident occurred”, “First of all there’s no wrong or inappropriate behavior shown by Officer Hull. In fact, he probably demonstrated restraint.”
2) There has been so much talk about how long it took before Dick was arrested. Because of Dick’s position and his obvious hatred for the all city employees, I am sure the police department wanted to make sure their investigation was complete and thorough, before he was arrested. I have been told you have a year and a half to investigate a crime, prior to arresting someone.
3) I have been told Dick filed an expungement order, destroying all of the records related to this event. I encourage the media to review ALL of the material that you might have and you will see that Dick confessed to making contact with Officer Hull. The confession was made to another high ranking city official.
7) Dick has told the public that he wants to give his campaign contributors their contributions back and this is part of the reason for his lawsuit. There have been several contributors that have gone on record and stated they don’t want the money back. Dick blames his failed attempt to be elected to the senate, was a result of his arrest. Maybe, just maybe he lost because the other candidate was better for the job?
8) There has been so much talk about how long this trial took and why it was dragged out so long. From the court records I have reviewed, the defense (Dick) was responsible for most of the continuances. The trial was running concurrent with Dick’s failed election attempt. I have been told that Dick chose to drag this out, for fear of a guilty verdict before his campaign was over.
9) Dick has had a problem with the Naperville Police Department for several years. My guess is Dick has a problem with any authority. I have seen some additional court proceedings where a DuPage County Judge threatened Dick with contempt of court over a traffic ticket he was found guilty on.
10) Dick has been recently quoted about “cutting the fat” from the cities budget, yet he has chosen to file an expensive lawsuit against the very city he represents. This was after Dick requested an apology from the city manager and full reimbursement for his failed campaign attempt. I was told the decision was left up the entire city council and ALL of them voted NO.
Dick has overstayed his welcome and he is a cancer for the City of Naperville. Dick is thriving for attention and I encourage the cities legal department to give it to him, in the form of a bill when this is all over. I encourage the city to fight this to the end, instead of settling this with a payout. When this is all over, let Dick nitpick the money spent and watch him cast the blame, like he does with everything else. I am not sure how Dick is allowed to remain on the council, since his decision making is obvious biased and tainted. Do the City of Naperville a favor and resign and I am sure this will help us finally become the Number One Place to Live.
For those of you who think Mr. Furstenau should drop this, allow me point out the obvious. The Naperville Police have a growing reputation for misuse of authority. If you are not aware of this, you must not live in Naperville. This is what has happened to him, what makes you think you wouldn't be next? This suit is about this Police Officer facing the consequences that come with making up false accusations, and to encourage him to think twice before he victimizes again. Thank you Mr. Furstenau for having the courage to stand up against a corrupt police force and for putting your neck out in order to protect others and discourage this sort of crime from repeating. It is about time the Naperville Police get called on the carpet!!
I personally know both Ofc. Hull & Tricky Dick. Ofc. Hull is the poster boy for honesty and integrity, while Tricky Dick is the poster boy for an anger management program. Just watch the weekly televised city council meetings and see what a baffoon he makes of himself. The one I feel sorry for in this ordeal is Tricky Dick's wife, what that poor lady has probably been subjected to over the years makes me sick!!! Ask any of Tricky Dick's employees at the old AT&T what type of jerk he was to them....GET HELP DICK!!!!!
One other FACT: Do you know who authorized the towing of cars on Chicago Ave for the 2006 New Years parade? Councilman Richard Rodney Furstenau....look it up....my god this guy is an IMBECIL!!!!
Every time I have had an interaction with anyone from NPD they have been polite and courteous and very professional. I've witnessed them escalate procedures with people but only in response to stupid juvenile antics by the suspect/perp such as mouthing back to an officer, failing to comply w/ a direct order or being an otherwise uncontrollable emotional nutcase out in public. I'm sure any 'contact' by anyone else would have landed them instantly face down on the ground and in handcuffs and on their way to the jail for striking an officer. Mr. F. needs to own up to the responsibility for his actions and accept the consequences thereof.
I enjoy reading the criticism's of the NPD and their misuse of power. After observing the attitudes's of some of our self-centered, narcassistic sweeties I applaud the Police for their porfessionalism. Two years ago at the Memorial Day parade Mr. Furstenau got his skivvies bunched because the city council was not positioned behind the Veterans. He and some other council members wanted to be there because of the position of importance. The comment was made by one of these council men that they would shut the parade down if they didn't get their way. I think we put them behind the horses but I forget. Just another example of the abuse of power and bad judgement of some of our elected officials.
Perhaps Mr. F. should try hitting a cop in Cicero and see how their response differs from the experience he had in Naperville. In fact, anyone who thinks that NPD acted way out of line should go try that little experiment and report back to us how they handled it, then let us know which you prefer.
Furstenau did not hit this Mr. Hull - period ! Besides not ONE Civilian witness came forward for the NPD - NOT ONE and it took two weeks for the cops to get their stories to mesh or follow some re-constructed time line.
NPD are often rude and out of control and I have lived here since 1981.
What about the case that was hushed up with the Muslin man whom had police enter his home at 1AM with no search warrant ?
Dick probably did snape the officer's chest to get his attention. He is a city official and was trying to convey to the officer that tickets were a bit much. Lets all move on and put this over exposed incident behind us....no charges should have been filed. A verbal reprimand to Dick by the police chief would have been appropriate.
Naperman,
Not Guilty and Innocent are two entirely different things.
He was not guilty of battery, which was the charge. Battery is a severe beating or pounding. The judge obviously felt that level had not transpired. Even a slight shove would not be enough to be considered 'battery'. That still does not mean no contact whatsoever may have transpired.
What does an unrelated incident (Muslim man) have to do with Mr. F's case anyway? If unrelated events can be brought up should someone bring up a previous charge of a hit and run involving a parked car? No. They are unrelated. While there are certain cases where police can enter a home without a search warrant, that has no cross over to this case at all.
Dan - The Muslim man's case was / or is being hushed up by the NPD - with a large out of Court settlement as his CIVIL & Constitutional Rights were violated.
Dan - maybe YOU should experience NPD Police entering your home at 1AM - while you are asleep in bed - Guns drawn & no Search warrant - Entering your bed room while you are there with your wife. Police claimed the door was open........and they just pushed it in and then entered. No Cause to enter a Man's house - period.
The City is hushing up the details of this Mis_deed by the NPD as well as the true details of the Furstenau case. His rights were also Violated. The NPD needs a whole NEW FResh Citizens Watch Dog group to look into their files. See what is being hidden !
Several things are of interest here, beyond the specific incident itself.
If the DUI thing with the officers happened as it is indicated, that's really troubling. Where's the Sun's investigative reports on that one?
What is the City attorney's position on Councilman Furstenau continuing to participate as a Councilman in this manner when he has filed a suit against the City, regardless of whether or not it is justified?
Let's see if the Sun can find this information out for us.
I have known Mr.Furstenau for over 2 decades. He is a decent unselfish person who cares for the rights of others especially the weak and powerless. He has no arrogance about him. He is one of the nicest guys I have ever met.
As far as the NPD, I have known them for nearly 3 decades. Most are very very arrogant with chips on their shoulder. Most are power hungry and have authority complexes.
Maybe one out of 4 cops is a really nice guy. But the other 3 really have serious problems.
I hope Mr. Furstenau straightens out the other 3 once and for all.
Touching a cop to get his attention should not be a crime. They touch us all the time. How hypocritical!!! Furthermore, the cop knew Mr. Furstenau posed absolutely no threat to him or anyone.
And if someone batters a cop, a cop calls back up and arrests the individual immediately. A 2 week delay really smells like a rotten egg.
I am a Naperville Taxpayer but I hope Mr.Furstenau gets 10 million or more. I think it will once and for all stop all abuse of citizens and bolt us into the best place to live in America instead of the second best place. I always felt if the policemen were a little friendlier(kind of like Mayor Pradel was in the old days) we would be ranked the best town in the world every year automatically. We are a great town and it is people like Mr. Furstenau who made us the great town we are. If it was not for people like him, we would be ranked as Stepford Wives II or the second most robotic town in America!! Who needs that?? But some of the writers who oppose any criticizm of the NPD are leading us in that sad direction.
May God Bless Mr. Furstenau!!! May God Bless Mayor Pradel!!! May they both bring glory and love to Naperville.
May all the cops become friendly and lovable like Mayor Pradel once was as a cop. Mayor Pradel is truly loved. I don't understand why cops do not want to follow in his footsteps and be truly loved too! Who wants to be hated?? So lets stop pickin on citizens who are trying to make good points!!!
Blake..
Dick has been a cancer ever since he was elected to the city council. I am glad to see his two cheerleader sons are behind him, because family is important and that is all he will have when this is over. I know the rest of the council is tired of Dick and I am sure the citizens are as well. Remember it was this time last year that Dick won the Naperville Sun's number one story of 2006. Not because he was innocent, it was because the readers wanted to remind everyone what piece of work he is/
Once again, if you read the court transcript's you will see that the judge even acknowledged Dick made contact with Officer Hull. Dick makes mention that it took thirty years to build his reputation, maybe he should take the next thirty and spend it in Utah. Please step down from the city council, pack your bags and move back to Utah!
Houston we have a PROBLEM. NAPERMAN seems to have a great grasp of the problem. How about a community discussion/forum in person to discuss problems and accusations about and within the NPD. Fasteddie, Michael Barbour, and Frank W. Abagnale for City Council!! These three obviously have their facts straight. All of these clowns that are complaining about the Police Department obviously are not aware that Naperville has one of the lowest crime rates in the nation for cities over 100,000 in population. If you think it's so bad here, move to Detroit MI or Gary IN. I would also like to see Tricky Dick slap a cop in those cities!! Little Napoleon would not have gotten off so easy in those cities!!
Tricky Dick for city manager!!
Naperville has a low crime mostly because of the socio & economic demographics of its population.
How many complaints are there against Off. Hull in the NPD files ? If there were..........do you think the average citizen could get to them even with a FOIA filed.
NaperMan....Who is the bigger moron? You or Tricky Dick? Answer: A TIE
Resolution and healing is most important for Naperville now. An expensive civil right trial is not what we need. The city should accept the 129K settlement offer, earmarked for court expenses and campaign contribution returns. Perhaps then we can resolve this problem with a handshake and an apology from both sides. There is a lesson to be learned by all of us, civility starts with our government.
Be a grown up, drop the suit and move on with life. The 15 minutes of fame is up. People never expect their contribution money back if their candidate loses. The system just doesn't work that way. To 'justify' the high sticker price on the lawsuit by using the 'refund' premise is just dodging one's own personal responsibility in the matter and an insult to the original contributors. Be a man and accept responsibility for your actions of actually making physical contact with the officer in the first place, regardless of how 'light' it was. It was the original 'disrespect' of the law that started it all. Accept the responsibility and consequences that come with it even if that seems to be a foreign concept with a lot of the citizens of this town.
A suggestion to R. Fursteneau was posted,be a grown up,drop the suit and move on.How will that HELP to expose the criminal conduct of some naperville police officers. Read your local paper, many citizens have written and called to express disgust with a corrupt and cruel police force. We need a farreaching, extensive federal civil rights violation suit into the conduct of NPD,top to bottom! What are the facts involved in the DUI that a Naperville Sgt. received, did other cops lie under oath? What are the facts in the case of man who's house was entered? How do so many retired police officers become top level city managers? Can you say doubldipping? The poor lady splattered with HOT coffee could not even get a police report written, let alone have the road-rager arrested. It took weeks for arrest and hurt the victims case in court,as per jury forewoman. The corrupt police depend on protection from corrupt politicians. In this county, how many employees have been arrested for crimes? We have a chance now, after Mr. Fitzgerald moves on,that may not be true.Would anyone like to join a group to push forward on these issues? organized crime can only exist where it is accept/protected by local politicians and combine members. The federal authorities are acutely aware of the problem with corrupt cops in the tri-state area, they have brought in a THIRD team to prosecute criminals who break the public trust. We drug test carpet-cleaners,but not police who harm and kill citizens?Until we have mandatory, randon cl. 5 testing we'll always have crooked cops.Napervillians do not have to look to far to see that. Thanks to the Sun for this blog space.Let's organize and get the support of honest pols.Mr. Quigley
Please exuse Mr. Quigley's stupid comments, he fell on his head as a child!!!
Fursteneau is a man who has a history of verbally abusing city employees and threatening their jobs any time he disagrees with a decision -- even if the decision was made by the city council.
Fursteneau has a long history of cronyism...trying to use his policital influence so his buddies and business associates don't have to follow the rules.
When Mr. Fursteneau's attacks on city employees finally became physical, he was arrested...as he should have been. It's no surprise that he wasn't elected to the state senate. What's amazing was that he was ever elected to the city council.
would the last person posting please comment on the accusations of criminal behavior by NPD officers.
What do you Fursteneau supporters have to say now that one of the most respected city managers in the country has published a letter detailing facts of threats, intimidation, and coercion? Wake up and realize the man is a power-hungry curmudgeon who should resign immediately.
The supporters of Mr F. are taking the release to federal authorities to see about any possible confict of interest or ethics violations occured when using government letterhead to express said views. Where can we get info on the Napergate lawsuits? I became involved with NPD after that time.We have another chance to express and document our allegations.
