Newark's girls basketball team fought hard, but couldn't overcome Anna Jones and Flanagan. The Norsemen lost in the Class 1A state championship game 62-60 in overtime on Saturday afternoon at Redbird Arena in Normal.

Lauren Johnson led Newark with 18 points and Sam Akre scored 16 points, pulled down 11 rebounds and had seven blocks. It wasn't enough, though, because Flanagan's Anna Jones set a state title game record with 39 points.
Newark ends its season 26-8. Check the Beacon News in print or beaconnewsonline.com on Sunday for a full recap of today's championship game.
