Daily Dose: April 5-6 - More on WV/Batavia baseball...

I sat out at Waubonsie Valley this morning and watched Batavia win 15-5 in six innings...

Unfortunately - print can sometimes be restricting, so here is more from some of the principals in that game

Waubonsie Vallye coach Dan Fezzuoglio
"We did some good things offensively from the second inning on. Other than this game and the St. Charles East game the other night, with what we've had going on with injuries, we've been pretty competitive."

"We're not a 1-6 team. We're not."

"In seven games, we've seen five No. 1 pitchers on the hill, so the other thing is we're seeing really good people on the hill, so that can help us down the line when you get in the middle of conference and get ourselves going."

On lefty reliever Ryne Gill, who came in and pitched three innings - picking off two runners at first, striking out two and giving up five runs.
"We brought him in against Naperville North earlier in the week, and we think North is the next best team we've seen. And Ryne did a great job for 2 1/3, so we had confidence going to him. And we had to use him last night for an inning or two, so he's seen a lot of work."

"That's the positive out of this stretch - we've seen 'Can I go to a Ryne Gill here?' Kids are getting a chance to respond and step up."

I just keep telling them: Don't look at the record now, we just keep going and at the end of the year we get in the tournament and nobody's going to want to see us. We just say 'Nobody's going to want to see us.' That's the way I look at it."

Ryan Welter, Batavia catcher
on starting pitcher Jordan Coffey
"The kid's a stud. He just does the best he can. I'm sure you know, he threw a perfect game a couple days back (against Rochelle) so coming out and giving up three runs, I'm sure he's a little disappointed, but he did a great job out on the mound today."

Batavia coach Matt Holm
on the team's aggressive baserunning incl: stolen bases, hit & run, secondary leads...
"We had some baserunning issues I wanted to work on, so we running through our gamut. Once we got the lead I was able to do some things I wanted to do, and that was a luxury too."
