The Back Nine: Open Season...the greatest in golf

The great part about golf is that there is always a back nine, so if you somehow didn't get your fill on the front side - there's always more to be had after the turn. That's what this part of the Beacon News' weekly golf coverage will do for you

This week, we take a look at qualifying for the U.S. Open and Nick Schenk's upcoming qualifying rounds at Conway Farms in Lake Forest....Read on for that, as well as some great U.S. Open video...

Nick Schenk advanced to U.S. Open sectional qualifying in 2007, but did not qualify. He's a professional, but he is only planning on playing in the Monday sectional qualifier at Conway Farms and the Illinois Open in July.....

"My confidence is pretty high right now, thanks to my playing at the local and I've always been playing well this year. I have a full time job so I'm only playing on the weekends, but I've been playing well, so that's good.

I've got a more 'nothing to lose mentality' and I'm having more fun. I feel good."

On Conway Farms...
"I love the course. It's a very hard course, which I love. I feel I do better...I have a better chance on hard courses. In tournaments, it's tougher for me to go out and shoot a 64-64 to qualify. I can play hard courses well and shoot 69-69 and its easier for me to qualify that way."

Something you learned from 2007...
"In the second round I tripled my second hole and I kind of mentally gave up, which I obviously shouldn't have. I have to realize I have a lot of holes to play to make up for stuff."

and finally...
"The local I got out of was at Conway, so that gives me confidence right off the bat. I'm going to have a good weekend of practice this coming weekend and get mentally prepared and make sure my confidence is at its highest level. That's the biggest thing for me."

Every sectional, except this one, will be held on Monday, June 2...

Congrats to Todd Russell, former Springbrook GC assistant pro, who moved on to take the head pro position at Green Garden CC in Frankfort. Todd's a great guy and will do a good job down there.
