The Back Nine: Going (for the) green with hybrids...

The great part about golf is that there is always a back nine, so if you somehow didn't get your fill on the front side - there's always more to be had after the turn. That's what this part of the Beacon News' weekly golf coverage will do for you

Weekley wins.jpgToday's front nine is about hybrid clubs, and what they can do for your game. Most players should switch out their long irons (3 & 4, sometimes 5 & 6) and move to hybrid that is much easier to hit with consistency. (Boo Weekley won the Verizon Heritage, twice, with a hybrid in the bag)

That's the key word here - consistency. Read on for more on hybrids, tips on how to hit them with help from Tanna Farms assistant pro Jeremy Groot and Phillips Park/Fox Valley Golf Club head pro Jeff Schmidt...Also read on for some local golf news and specials!

Here's some more advice from Tanna Farms assistant pro Jeremy Groot
When players look at a hybrid, they'll see varying degrees of lofts marked on the head (i.e. 21-degree, 22-degree) what should they choose?"Your best bet is to find a club that will let you demo a couple, take them out to the range and see what the yardage is on each one and fill in your bag, and fill some gaps with the yardage morseo than worrying about the degrees."

With a hybrid, where do you play the ball in your stance?"I generally play mine two inches off the inside of my left foot, play it moreso like a wood than an iron."

If you're looking for an excellent chance to try out some hybrids (or any other club for that matter) head over to Naperbrook Golf Course for a multi-vendor demo day on May 16 from 4-7 p.m. Vendors include Nike, Ping, Cleveland, Taylormade, Wilson, and Powerbilt. Merchandise discounts will be avilaible.

Naperbrook also has an early bird special Mon-Fri. - $25 includes green fee, cart, coffee, and donut. This will occur off of the back nine for the first hr. of tee times. Finally all customers that reserve tee times on line will receive $ 1 off of the green fee for the entire group.
