Daily Dose: Jan. 21 - McNabb = Soriano

i'm an Eagles fan.
and I no longer want Donovan McNabb under center.
I've felt this way for over a year, and Sunday's debacle just pounded it home further. I like Donovan. I think he's put up with more undue crap than any QB this century. I also think he's one of the top 10 QBs in the league.

I know what I'm asking. I know there are no guarantees in finding a great successor. I don't know if Kevin Kolb is worth anything. I don't know if Andy Reid and the Iggles could find and develop another top 10 QB.

But still.
I'm tired.
McNabb.jpgI'm tired of the losing. I'm tired of the bad play when it matters most. I'm tired of the throws into the dirt, the ones two yards behind or six yards over, the ones to the wrong shoulder, the holding onto the ball too long, the inability to perform when it counts.

Yes, Donovan's a regular season winner. But 5 NFC titles games in 9 years is not something to be happy about. Not when you're 1-4 and 0-1 in the Super Bowl. Not when your QB can't rise to the occasion when truly great QBs do.

Just look at the guy who has beat McNabb twice - Kurt Warner. While McNabb is fumbling and intercepting and incompleting, Warner is dissecting and throwing touchdowns.

This is what McNabb is. He's the football version of Alfonso Soriano...

Over the grueling 16-game NFL season, Donovan is far enough above average to lead you to the playoffs. When one game doesn't matter, he can get the job done.

But when it's playoff time, when that one game, that one drive do matter - he disappears.
Hey - he's not the only one in sports history. He's just the QB, so it's magnified a lot more.

Want proof?
In 10 years, Donovan is 82-45-1 as a starter*. That's a 64% winning percentage. He's thrown for almost 200 touchdowns and 30,000 yards. He's a five-time Pro Bowler and has rushed for over 3,000 yards and another 25+ TDs. In the regular season, Donovan gets it done more often than not.
* he has only started 15 or more games five times

In 10 years, Alfonso is a career .282 hitter (.329 OBP) with 270 homeruns, 700+ RBI and nearly 250 stolen bases. He's a 6-time all-star and 4-time Silver Slugger. Dude produces over the long haul of a 162-game season.

But what about when it matters? When every game, every at-bat, every snap, matters most?
Soriano
44 games (or 27% of a regular season!) & 174 at-bats - he's a .213 hitter with 4 homeruns and 18 RBI. He has struck out 30% of the time and had only 7 extra base hits. His OBP drops all the way to .263.
Team wise - his teams have won four playoff series he's been a part of, and lost 5. They are 0-2 in the World Series.

McNabb
In the playoffs, McNabb's rating drops 5 points and hovers just above 80. He has nearly as many games with a rating 75 or lower (6) as 90 or higher (9). He has 23 TDs, but 18 INTs.
More importantly, in title games he has turned in ratings of 73.1, 58.5, 19.3, 111.1 and 97.4.
Naturally, the 111.1 came in the 2004 victory over the Falcons. He followed that up with a 75.4 in the Super Bowl.
Interestingly, he had a pretty good 97.4 rating vs. Arizona, but he posted a rating under 58 in the first half when the Cardinals nearly blew it open.

Team wise, the Eagles are 9-6 in playoff games - but again 1-4 in NFC title games and 0-1 in the Super Bowl.

I'm just tired...as are most Eagles fans...and in all liklihood - Donovan himself

McNabb choked on both second and third down on the Eagles' last series. He overshot an open man on second down and threw behind the receiver on third down. I think the Cardinals got away with pass interference on fourth down.

McNabb had been playing an excellent second half up until that last drive. In a must-score situation, he gagged.
