Rick's rants: Lovie's son tries NIU

The Beacon News has learned that Miles Smith, the son of Bears coach Lovie Smith, has enrolled at Northern Illinois University for the current spring semester and intends to walk on to the Huskie football team.

Smith played running back and defensive back at Lake Forest High School for coach Chuck Spagnoli, graduating in June of 2008. He suffered a leg injury midway through his senior season in 2007 and did not play when the Scouts met and lost to Oswego in a first-round playoff game that season.

He will likely be a defensive back candidate in spring practice for the Huskies.

Spagnoli said he thought Smith had intended to enroll at Missouri last fall and walk on there but couldn't confirm if he had. A spokesman in the Missouri sports information office said he could not confirm if Miles Smith had been among the 30 or so players who tried to walk on last fall.

Neither Lovie nor Miles Smith could be reached for comment.
