Dear Swami: Does Randi Scheurer have a chance to defeat Melissa Bean in the 8th District Democratic Party primary for Congress?
Bucko, we peer deeply into the crystal ball for a sign from beyond. Actually it’s just one of those black “8 Balls” but the answers are always dead on.
Will Randi Scheurer win?
And the answer swims into view …
Mr. Snowball, meet Mr. Hell.
Mr. Hell, meet Mr. Snowball.
Every family needs a hobby and the Scheurer family has decided that running for Congress is theirs. But we fear the only way they’ll take out Melissa Bean is with a high-caliber sniper slingshot.
Hubby Bill got 5 percent in the last election, enough to make sure his “Moderate Party” gets to sit at the table again. But Bill has announced he won’t run if Randi wins the Democrat nomination.
What a noble fellow. So many parties; so few spouses. It would be so much easier if the Scheurers were Mormon.
He ran an interesting but essentially doomed race last time and was gearing up for a repeat in 2008. To be fair, he looked reasonable on the same debating stage with the granite-mugged David McSweeney who, by conparison, made John Kerry seem manic and effervescent. (Our fave 2004 joke: Bartender says to John Kerry as he pours a drink: "Hey, why the long face?")
McSweeney spent $3,320,545 last time to get 12,407 fewer votes than Bean. She had $324,192 left over to run again, and McSweeney had $688,319 extra if he wanted another crack at the brass ring.
If either or both the Scheurers run, it certainly will juice a debate that needs some verve. Bean goes for the rope-a-dope style. She’s the most Republican version of a Democrat we’ve ever seen in public. McSweeney made Mark Kirk look like a rock star. This race needs some ER electrode paddles.
We hope Randi Scheurer makes a good run. She has a very high babe quotient. And good ideas, too, we guess.
Bill would never have tried to scratch out Melissa Bean’s eyes when they debated the Iraq War. But we bet Randi would try. It makes those Kiwanis luncheon debates so much more interesting.
