In the workplace, nothing is better than the three-day weekend. The Swami often takes four, just because we can. It’s somewhat the same for high school football fans, who look forward to this weekend each fall above all others. Read on the picks ....
Swami was 11-3 last week; and 42-17 overall for the season. Swami, however is 0-4 with Upset Specials which is upsetting.
Because of a religious holiday for those of the Jewish faith, some football teams are not able to play games this weekend on their regular Friday/Saturday and have to play on Thursday instead. Hence the three-day prep football weekend … heaven on earth for us prep football fananticos.
And the news gets even better. There actually are prime-time games worth watching in person on each of the three days.
And then you can cap off your weekend with the Bears and Cowboys on Sunday Night NFL football. Does it get any better than that?
Does it get any better than a 14-0 week of picking games by The Swami?
Ready or not, here they come:
Tonight
Stevenson 28, Mundelein 7 – Mundelein does this really cool thing on kickoff returns. After the ball is caught, three players huddle up, then spread out and all run toward the end zone while looking like they have the football. Of course, only one does. That should get the Mustangs 7 points against the University of Stevenson, which started the season 0-3 and is likely to finish it 6-3.
North Chicago 21, Lakes 13 – Randy Ratajcyk of Lakes will be the best QB on the field, and junior Jimal Hill of North Chicago will be the best running back on the field. Lakes runs every play from the shotgun, uses the no-huddle and its favorite play is the shovel pass. It should be worth 13 points against North Chicago, which will be too fast for the Eagles.
Lake Zurich 31, Libertyville 0 – Bears finished second in last year’s IHSA Class 7A playoffs, and have surplanted Libertyville as this area’s top Classs 7A team. The final score will reflect that.
Vernon Hills 20, Round Lake 7 – Ray Bryant of Round Lake is a top-notch running back. Vernon Hills is very good and coulda/woulda/shoulda beat Libertyville last week.
Glenbrook South 20, Waukegan 7 – Still without star QB Mar’Quezie Edmonds (wrist injury), Bulldogs will have trouble moving against a state power. Waukegan’s given up just 22 points in four games.
Warren 7, Zion-Benton 6 – Battle of 1-3 teams with excellent defenses and struggling offenses.
Deerfield 40, Maine East 0 – Deerfield is starting coveted two-week swing of games through Maine East and Niles North.
Highland Park 20, Niles North 0 – This is a tuneup for Giants who get Glenbrook North next week.
Friday
Carmel 50, St. Joseph 0 – St. Joseph hasn’t won a football game in years … many years.
Grant 21, Wauconda 15 – Nobody can stop Wauconda running back Brad “The Wiz” Wisniewski. But Grant has more horses, including Pavel “The Horse” Zurkowski, a 6-3, 215-pound QB who likes to run as much as “The Wiz” does.
Johnsburg 28, Grayslake Central 6 – Fifth loss will eliminate Grayslake Central from playoff contention.
Saturday
Luther North lots, Lake Forest Academy not a lot -- Caxys were torched for 77 points last week.
Lake Forest 28, Antioch 21 – This will be closer than you might think, given that Lake Forest is unbeaten and Antioch’s two wins are over two winless Grayslake teams.
Upset Special
Grayslake North 13, Huntley 12 – No school’s fans are more cutting edge than the Knight Riders of Grayslake. It will be interesting to see what they do when the first grid victory in school history is assured. Friday night, we’ll all find out.
