The Swami has watched Chicago Cubs starter Carlos Zambrano very carefully for signs his delivery is askew, or that he is throwing across his body more and losing velocity. Or that his throwing stride has extended beyond his perfect range of motion. None of those things explains why he has come unglued. But the Swami knows why. Read on to find out to Zee prob-LEM ….
Zambrano had an O-fer August.
How could he go from being a pitcher worth $90 million to one who can’t get past the fifth inning?
When Carlos Zambrano came lead-footing around third base and through the coach’s stop sign on his way to being thrown out at home plate on Monday, it was the first time Swami noticed for sure what might be his problem.
Then we saw it.
While no one was watching, Zambrano has put on what seems to be at least 15 to 20 extra pounds. Maybe it’s an optical illusion. You always look heavier on TV. That’s why Swami always wears extra makeup when he appears on local news programs, even radio.
But we sense that Carlos can’t get his shirt even tucked in anymore. Or see his feet without a mirror. The team lists his weight as 255 pounds. We bet it’s at least 275, 30 pounds of which are guacamole dip.
His beam is about like the width of Lusitania these days.
A few pounds wouldn’t make so much difference to some athletes, but all it takes for a pitcher to lose his zing is 1-2 mph off the old hummer. That takes you from being Don Drysdale to being Don Knotts.
