Swami has some deep-seated anxieties for all you Notre Dame fans.
Is Swami the only one to think of a possibility that's more dire even than the 0-3 record of the present...and I don't mean o-fer for the season. Yikes!
Coach Charlie Weis has the reputation as an offensive "guru", much of it linked to the New England Patriots where he was the offensive coordinator.
But now we are told that some portion of the Patriots' "genius' for finding the perfect moments and perfect matchups is that they stole the defensive signals from many of their opponents.
So, Swami says to himself nervously, what if Charlie Weis' reputation as a genius is built to some degree on cheating? And that without the benefit of the Patriots’ spy cameras, he's like everyone else with an opinion about how a great offensive works?
What has happened to the Irish this year can be traced without stretching the point too far to the difference between pro coaching and college coaching.
Pro coaches don’t have to teach their players how to hit each other. They already know that; that’s why they get the big dollars.
College players are still learning what it takes to play on a big stage. Maybe Weis never had to teach players that, or even be around coaches who did. After all, all the Irish success of the last two years was based on the players Weis inherited.
There does not seem so much wrong with this ND football team that hitting opponents, swarming to the ball on defense and good old-fashion emotion might not sure.
At the college level, football is considerably more emotion than intellect. Maybe Weis is less good at knowing what emotion is required, because he’s never been around it as a coach.
