Swami, we Irish fans have now suffered though seven straight losses, including two to end the previous season. Any chance the Irish will ever win a game or are we doomed to go winless through the entire year. Signed: Hoping
Dear hoping,
Well, the performance in the last half last weekend against Purdue was a hopeful sign for a program that seem to be beyond all chance.
But the truth now is that the Irish have a;lmost no chanvce the next three weeks against UCLA, Boston College and , gulp, USC.
But it also look like the team has a fighting chance in its last four games this season ---Navy, Duke, Air Force and Stanford. It would be an odd irony, to be sure, if the Irish end the season with a four-game winning streak after the abomination this season has been.
If nothing else, perhaps coach Charlie Weis has learned another one of the differences between pros and college. He did almost nothing tro prepare the underclassmen last year for their role in the the year to come. Quarterback Brady Quinn took all the snaps and Weis allowed Evan Sharpley (who may have to take over for a gimpy Jimmy Clausen this week) almost no chance to broaden his game.
Pros just retool by hiring new players. Can't do that in college.
The first cause of this season was a lousy senior class recruitted by Ty Willingham, buit Weis did nothing to address that lack in preparation for this season. Lots could hjave been done last year with added plahying time for underclassmen in games that Irish had in hand.
