Swami, are you ever mystified by the world, or do you really understand all and see even more? I am puzzled about almost everything, but I would feel better if I knew you occasionally thrown off your game, too. Signed: Dunderheaded in Deerfield.
Ah, where to begin?
Yes, of course, Swami meets his occasional match in the logic department, and here’s one of those cases.
Rep. Melissa Bean’s office put out a press release this week announcing that she and Republican Rep. Mark Kirk would hold a joint news conference Thursday in downtown Chicago. They would plead with the state Legislature not sit on its thumbs this year and, instead, pass a budget that allows for the gurgle of federal transportation cash to flow unimpeded into the state.
First, in case Bean has forgotten, she is a Democrat, and the Democrats generally would like to defeat Republicans in the just-around-the-corner election. Kirk is one of those the Dems would very much like to banish.
Normally, Dems don’t like to do things that seem to give credibility to Republicans, like holding feel-good public presentations where they get to seem like their bipartisan chums.. And further, Bean’s press release makes no mention of Dan Seals, her fellow Democrat who is trying to oust Kirk.
Maybe Bean has forgotten what it’s like being a newbie political challenger trying to oust an entrenched incumbent. Maybe she’s just forgotten she’s a Democrat.
PLus, what are the chance this heartfelt solicitation of thoughtfulness toward the Legislature will have any effect? Posing nicely for the lights when no tangible effect is likely? We call that politics.
