"Hello Mr. Ness, Could you tell me why I can not drive my pick up truck on Lake Shore Drive. I do have B plates but the truck is not a business vehicle and it is smaller than some of the SUV's I've seen on LSD."
Michael
The restriction on trucks driving on Lake Shore Drive and some other Chicago streets and boulevards is a Chicago city ordinance. Apparently, the intent of the restriction is to keep delivery and other trucks off of streets and roads meant for passenger vehicles. As you mention, it has become popular in recent years for people to use pickups for personal transportation, although their original purpose was for hauling materials and commodities. As I understand the ordinance, it applies to vehicles required to display truck plates. I agree with you that many SUVs, Hummers, etc are larger than some pickups, however these vehicles are intended for passenger transportation. This ordinance is primarily enforced by Chicago City Police.
