"Below I have attached an email from Feb 2005. There seems to be a lack of enforcement regarding the use of these lights. I consider them a safety hazard when being approached by them since usually the operator of the vehicle has no clue that he is blinding oncoming traffic. Many of these lights are way out of adjustment and aimed every which way! Where's the enforcement? I'm sure that they are driving by police squads, blinding them, just like the rest of us."

I agree that the use of auxiliary lights along with headlights can be blinding to other drivers. As I indicated before, the use of these auxiliary lights is illegal when approaching other drivers who may be blinded by the lights. Police routinely enforce this law, however as with all laws, we rely on voluntary compliance. I believe that many people are unaware that their use is unlawful. Through education, hopefully this can be overcome. I am posting this E-mail to help that education process along. I know that it is also taught in Defensive Driving courses given by officers to seniors and drivers remanded by the courts. I will pass your concerns along to other officers as well, but I know that we at the Illinois State Police routinely enforce this law. Thanks for writing.
