Spotlights on vehicles

Hi,

A buddy of mine recently purchased a used police car mainly to get to
and from college. The car has no police markings what so ever, but
has 2 spot lights still on the sides of the windshield. I was
wondering if it was illegal to have 1 or even 2 spotlights still on
the car.

Thanks,

-Ben

625 ILCS 5/12-207 addresses Spot Lamps and auxiliary driving lamps. It says that any motor vehicle in Illinois may be equipped with "not to exceed one spot lamp". It further says that when lit, it must be so aimed and used upon approaching another vehicle that no part of the high intensity portion of the beam be directed to the left of the vehicle or directed more than 100 feet ahead. It also cannot be directed so to blind other drivers.

The only exception is for authorized emergency vehicles or snowplows owned by a governmental body. In other words, your friend must remove one of the spot lights to comply with the law. He can keep one of the lights on the car if he wishes, and still be in compliance with the law. Thanks for writing.
Randy
