How to be funny without writers

Conan O'Brien did a bit on his show the other day in which he, Stephen Colbert and Jon Stewart had a fight about who had helped Mike Huckabee the most. It is so funny that when I happened upon it (all these shows are past my bedtime for everyday viewing) I just had to share.

WARNING: There is some late-night-type language in here.

It may be true that you can't have four minutes of three dorks fake fighting every night, but this was a successful bit.

I think we tend to overlook talent when it's not nominated for academy awards but I do think guys like Colbert and Stewart are among the biggest talents we have on TV.

This is one of the reasons why. I'm still laughing.

You know, I think these guys - Colbert, Stewart, Conan, Letterman - they are all extremely talented and I would argue that they do get their props. Sure, they'll never win Oscars, but I've always thought that the people who win Emmys are usually more talented anyways. It takes a lot of talent to be as consistently funny as these guys every night. I would argue that it takes more talent than someone who makes a hilarious movie that lasts only an hour and a half. I think the same is true for drama. Look at a show like Six Feet Under or the first season of ER. It seems to me that making 13-20 episodes of quality with complex characters and story arcs takes more talent than making a great movie. Yet, overall, I would have to agree that the respect is lacking when it comes to television talent.
